Getting Inspired To Decorate – Master Bedroom Ideas
(Getting Inspired To Decorate – Master Bedroom Ideas)
We have lived in our home for almost nine years. We privately rent but we are allowed to decorate. Despite the amount of time we have lived here, we have never decorated the master bedroom, something that seems crazy when I think about it. We have always been so busy with other things and other people, including caring for someone, that our room has just been left with plain white walls and dodgy plaster work.
Our house is a typical British Victorian house. It is set over four floors. There is a cellar, the next floor has a kitchen and a living room, both 5m by 4m. The floor above that, first floor, has two double bedrooms and a bathroom. The very top floor, set in the roof space, is one giant room that is basically the size of a whole floor of the house. It has two tiny windows and sloping roof that limits wall space, but is a huge room and has so much potential.
I have always been a big fan of Cath Kidston, and so have always envisioned the room being decorated with pastels and florals. My husband had no objections to this and so I started to make plans in my head and search online at pictures that looked how I thought I wanted the room to look. I even started a pinterest board!
However, more and more I started to find myself attracted to a different style of room. I realised I wanted a room that looks like a hotel suite, a room that is plain, relaxing, luxurious but simple and chintz just wasn’t going to do that for me. I started to collect holiday brochures, just to see how the rooms were laid out and decorated and I soon feel in love with one particular hotel …
The Plaza, New York City.
Yes, it is expensive and luxurious, but after spending many happy hours trawling through photos on the internet I think their style can be condensed down to it being simple, elegant, cream, white and gold.
These are some of my favourite photos that show what I mean …
When you look closely, the walls are cream with panelling detail. The woodwork is white and accessories are gold or cream. That is easily translated into my own home and can be done in a budget friendly way, one of the most important considerations for me at the moment.
I can do fake wood panelling, I can paint the walls cream and woodwork white. I can look for accessories that are gold or even get busy with a spray can of gold paint myself!
I love the layout for the sink which is this image …
I don’t want to do that for the bathroom, but I have a table just like that in my cellar that I could paint up and use to make a dressing table for makeup and hair products. I have been looking for a dressing table for a long time and this just makes me smile when I look at it, so this is what I am planning to do. I can find a large mirror for the wall and spray the frame gold if needed, so this is my plan!
The one thing I have learned while trying to decide what to do with the room, is to look at as many pictures as possible. Mae sure they are pictures both of what you think you want and what you think you don’t want – somewhere between the two you will be able to find what makes your heart sing.
I doubt I will ever be able to afford to stay at the Plaza hotel, the nearest I will get to it is watching Home Alone 2, but I can view these photos, break the rooms down to their basic elements and then recreate some of that luxurious feel and simplicity in my own home. Hopefully with a bit of work, some ingenuity and a lot of spray paint, I can create a room that is as relaxing as a hotel room.
I will report back with ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures when it is done 🙂
